What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury, caused by rapid movement of the brain within the skull. This can be caused by an impact to the head or to the body.

This impact causes chemical changes within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and a temporary decrease in energy within the brain. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or balance problems, among others.

Concussion Treatment

Through the Complete Concussions program, Amped Physiotherapy offers a variety of concussion treatments, services and strategies. These including:

  • Individual and team baseline testing
  • Exercise stress testing for return-to-sport readiness
  • Exercise programs that help you to work out within your symptom limits while you heal
  •  Vestibular, oculomotor, cervical spine rehabilitation
  • Acupuncture and dry needling/intramuscular stimulation
  • Educational resources

During the early stage following injury, a period of relative symptom-limited physical and cognitive rest is recommended. Research suggests 24-48 hours, however, these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Following a short period of rest, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) recommends a gradual increase in mental and physical activity supervised by a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management. As certified Complete Concussions clinicians, Stephanie, Simon and Emma have completed extensive professional training in safe and research-supported return to mental and physical activity.

Complete Concussions Treatment Approach

Pre-Season Testing

Multimodal pre-season testing is a series of physical and cognitive tests that provide a pre-injury overview of healthy brain function. These tests can offer healthcare practitioners with an objective benchmark on which to compare, should a patient sustain a concussion. It is important to remember that not all baseline testing is created equal. Complete Concussions has selected the best evidence-based tools available to provide you with comprehensive, multimodal, proven baseline testing.

As concussion symptoms often resolve days to weeks before the brain has fully recovered, having valuable baseline information may help practitioners to make safer return to play decisions.
