Manual Therapy at Our Clinic: What We Offer, How We Do It, and the Training Behind It

At Amped Physiotherapy, we are committed to providing comprehensive and effective treatment for our clients through a range of advanced physiotherapy techniques. One of the core treatments we offer is manual therapy—a hands-on approach designed to relieve pain, improve movement, and promote recovery. The manual therapy techniques we use are a set of specialized treatment techniques that are unique to you and the problem you have come to us for help with. It is a key component of the services we provide, rooted in the principles and guidelines set forth by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s (CPA) Orthopedic Division.

What is Manual Therapy?

Manual therapy involves the use of your physiotherapist’s hands to manipulate, mobilize, or apply pressure to muscles, joints, and soft tissues. The goal of manual therapy is to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and restore function to affected areas. It is often used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as:

  • Joint pain or stiffness (e.g., neck, back, shoulders, knees)
  • Muscle tightness or spasms
  • Soft tissue injuries (e.g., sprains, strains, tendinitis)
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Chronic pain

Manual therapy techniques include:

  • Joint mobilizations: Controlled application of force to your joints to restore normal mobility when your joints are stiff;
  • Soft tissue techniques: Techniques such as myofascial release, strip and stretch, deep tissue massage, or trigger point release help to address muscle tension, nerve mobility and reduce pain.
  • Active assisted stretching and mobilizations: To improve joint mobility, muscle flexibility and control in a new range of motion, and to reduce stiffness.

How Does Manual Therapy Work?

Manual therapy works by targeting the underlying causes of pain and dysfunction. By applying skilled and controlled movements to joints, muscles, and other soft tissues such as nerves and fascia, we aim to:

  • Relieve pain by reducing muscle spasm and improving blood circulation to injured tissues.
  • Restore joint capsule mobility to help improve your overall movement and functional abilities in areas of stiffness.
  • Restore nerve mobility by moving segments of your body through specific directions to add or relieve tension in nerve tissue.

Our physiotherapists use a combination of manual therapy techniques, customized to each patient’s individual needs. This treatment will be integrated into a broader treatment plan that will include strengthening exercises and education about movement patterns.

Different Kinds Of Manual Therapy

Manual physiotherapy includes a variety of techniques. These include, but are not limited to:

Soft Tissue Mobilization

Our physiotherapists use soft tissue treatments to break up scar tissue and adhesions caused by inflammation or injury.

Joint Mobilization

If you have a restricted joint as a result of receiving an injury, there is no question you have probably felt pain. Our physiotherapists are trained in joint manipulation techniques to restore restricted joints by applying force in very specific directions. These techniques are effective and safe. They allow for your range of motion to be increased, as well as the improvement of the restricted joint’s mobility, improving the nutrition of the cartilage and allowing the muscles surrounding it to work the way they are supposed to.

Manual traction

With manual traction techniques, our physiotherapists will use their hands or a strap to relieve pressure on certain areas or joints of the body in order to relieve tension from spasming or tight muscles, mobilize nerve structures, or give gentle stimulation to all the joint receptors that are responsible for creating tension to calm them down.

Training and Certification in Manual Therapy

At Amped Physiotherapy, we pride ourselves on the expertise of our physiotherapists. All of our therapists are trained in post-graduate advanced manual therapy techniques, particularly those aligned with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Orthopedic Division

The Orthopedic Division is a specialized branch within the CPA that provides structured education, training, and certification for physiotherapists in orthopedic manual therapy. To become certified, physiotherapists must complete extensive training in advanced manual therapy techniques, which includes:

  • Theoretical education: Understanding musculoskeletal anatomy, biomechanics, and the principles behind manual therapy techniques.
  • Practical training: Hands-on workshops and clinical practice to develop proficiency in manual therapy techniques.
  • Post-graduate education: Continuing education in advanced assessment, diagnosis, and treatment strategies, often through the CPA’s Orthopedic Division’s internationally recognized courses.
  • Clinical competency: Physiotherapists must demonstrate proficiency in applying manual therapy techniques to a variety of musculoskeletal conditions under real-world clinical conditions.

Physiotherapists who are members of the CPA’s Orthopedic Division also undergo a rigorous certification process that ensures they are up-to-date with the latest evidence-based practices in manual therapy. This specialized training allows our team to provide the highest standard of care, ensuring effective treatment for a wide range of conditions.

At Amped Physiotherapy, you can trust that you’re receiving care from physiotherapists who are both skilled and knowledgeable in manual therapy. Our team’s dedication to ongoing learning and development ensures that we provide you with the most effective treatments available. FAQs on Manual Therapy

What Does a Manual Therapist Do?

A manual therapist is a healthcare professional who specializes in the use of hands-on treatments to treat musculoskeletal conditions. Manual therapy techniques can include joint mobilization techniques, soft tissue massage, and stretching. After an initial assessment manual therapists can also provide you with education on proper body mechanics and posture to help prevent future injuries.

Is Manual Therapy Effective?

Yes, manual therapy is an effective treatment for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. This specialized form of treatment helps reduce chronic pain, improve range of motion, and restore normal function. Studies have shown that manual therapy can be more effective than other forms of treatment such as medications or injections in some cases.

Is Manual Therapy the Same As Physiotherapy?

No, manual therapy is not the same as physiotherapy. Physiotherapy is a broad term that encompasses many different types of treatments and therapies. Manual therapy is just one type of treatment that physiotherapists may use to help their patients.

What Is the Difference Between a Manual Therapy and a Massage Therapy?

The main difference between a manual therapist and a massage therapist is the scope of their practice. A manual therapist is a healthcare professional who uses a hands-on approach to treat musculoskeletal conditions. Massage therapists, on the other hand, specialize in providing relaxation and stress relief through massage techniques.
