Our Rehabilitation Ice treatment, also known as cold therapy, is a 30-minute session of physiotherapy treatment on our ice pad at Amped Sports Lab. This type of treatment is specifically for hockey players transitioning from gym-based exercise to skating following a significant injury such as a fracture or surgery. The sessions are run by a physical therapist and planned according to the player's stage of healing, physical tolerance, and restrictions (if any) from the orthopedic specialist
Cold water therapy works by reducing inflammation and pain through vasoconstriction. When we feel pain, our body releases chemicals called neuropeptides which cause blood vessels to constrict. This reduces the amount of blood flowing into the area causing less heat loss from the affected area. The end result is reduced inflammation and pain.
Ice therapy has been used for centuries to treat various health conditions such as arthritis, muscle pain relief, muscle spasms, acute pain, athletic injuries, and inflammation. The benefits of cold therapy include reducing swelling, improving circulation, increasing blood flow, relieving stress, and boosting metabolism.
There are several types of therapies available, such as cold packs, heat therapy, and cryotherapy. Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze tissue, which causes cells to contract and constrict blood vessels. This results in decreased swelling and increased circulation.
